2010 Cavendish University Cup, presented by TBayTel, a Success
THUNDER BAY, Ont. - Organizers of the Cavendish University Cup National Hockey Championships are declaring this year’s event a success, completing their two year commitment as host.
Murray Walberg, Chair of the Committee, said that attendance increased this year. “We estimate an attendance of 52,000 for the entire weekend,” says Walberg. “Many came for the hockey and others came for the additional activities including the RBC Hockey Hall of Fame and Molson Wolf Den. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”
The Cavendish University Cup, presented by TBayTel, brought more than great hockey to the city. Economic impact over the two years is estimated at $3.5 million, a significant achievement for this hockey program.
“In our initial talks about the LU Hockey Program, we always planned to host the nationals, “ says Rory Cava, President of Lakehead Thunderwolves. “This event has increased the awareness of our hockey program and promoted a positive image for us as well as the school and our community.”
Lakehead Thunderwolves has been a success story since its inception 9 years ago, boasting a record of over 3,000 fans per game on average. Tom Warden, Director of LU Athletics and Executive member of the Thunderwolves says that fan support is what makes this program great and a success story both on and off the ice. “LU Thunderwolves hockey has significant economic impact for our community. The operating budget alone is $1.4 million and currently has five full-time and 25 part time employees.”
Organizers have no specific details regarding the financial picture from the weekend but are optimistic that the objective of breaking even is definitely within reach.
“Our volunteers have gone beyond the call of duty for this tournament. Our out of town guests, officials, media, players and coaches, have all praised the organization and the hospitality. I applaud the 100 plus volunteers who have committed their time and expertise. They have made my job extremely easy and enjoyable. I have to say a great big thank you to them all,” says Walberg.
Next year’s CIS University Hockey Championships will be hosted by the University of New Brunswick.
