HALIFAX (CIS) – Fifth-year guard Simon Farine led all scorers with 21 points as the sixth-seeded Dalhousie Tigers defeated the No. 7 Concordia Stingers 76-65 in the second consolation game of the CIS men’s basketball championship, Saturday afternoon, at the Halifax Metro Centre.

Dalhousie’s win sets up a consolation final between conference champions Sunday at 10:30 a.m. AT. The AUS champ Tigers, who lost 91-79 to defending W.P. McGee Trophy winner Saskatchewan in Friday’s quarter-final round, will face OUA champ Lakehead for fifth place.

Concordia, which claimed the Quebec title this season, returns home from the Final 8 with an 0-2 record. The Stingers dropped a 73-66 decision to Carleton on Friday.

“It’s not the final you want to play in but the guys worked hard today, and they’ll play hard again tomorrow,” said Dalhousie head coach John Campbell. “Tomorrow is all about pride. We can still finish fifth in the country.”

Farine, a senior from Toronto, and fellow fifth-year veteran Joseph Schow of Medicine Hat, Alta., led the way for the Tigers. Farine grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to complete a double-double, while Schow was named player of the match following a 14-point, nine-board effort.

Decee Krah, a fourth-year guard from Hamilton, paced Concordia with 20 points. Second-team all-Canadian Kyle Desmarais of Montreal had 13.

The Tigers prevailed despite shooting only 40 per cent from the floor (28-of-70) including 30 per cent from beyond the arc (6-of-20). The Stingers were hurt by poor free throw shooting, making only 46.2 per cent of their attempts (6-of-13).

Dalhousie took the lead early on and never looked back. The Tigers were up 18-13 after the first quarter and 38-29 at halftime, and led by as many as 20 points late in the third frame following a three-pointer by Peter Leighton of Halifax, another senior in his final weekend wearing the yellow and gold uniform.

Concordia came back to within nine early in the fourth but Dalhousie quickly restored a double-digit advantage en route to the comfortable 11-point win.
