OTTAWA - With the 2010 CIS Final 8 Men's Basketball National Championship just over a week away, the pieces are slowly coming together as teams qualify, setting the stage for an exciting tournament from March 19-21 at Scotiabank Place.
The Windsor Lancers stamped their ticket to the CIS championship after claiming their second OUA West title in four years with a victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves last weekend.
In a rematch of the 2007 Wilson Cup game, the reigning national champion Carleton Ravens will host the Lancers on March 13 at 8:00 p.m. Despite having an automatic berth as hosts, the No. 1 Ravens will attempt to enter the national tournament as OUA champions for the third straight year.
After falling to the Ravens in the OUA East final, the Ottawa Gee-Gees will take on the Thunderwolves Saturday for the third OUA berth into the CIS championship.
The Saskatchewan Huskies were the bottom seed in the Canada West final four, but they upset both the UBC Thunderbirds and the Calgary Dinos to win their first conference men's basketball title.
As the runner-up in Canada West, the Dinos will also be making the trip to Ottawa.
The former No. 1 nationally-ranked Thunderbirds are still in the running for the wildcard entry into the tournament.
The QSSF berth will be decided Saturday night when UQAM hosts Laval in the Quebec final.
Cape Breton, StFX, Saint Mary's, Dalhousie, Acadia and UPEI are all vying for the AUS berth, which will be awarded on Sunday, following the conference Final Six tournament.
