Preseason: Hawks lose by eight to Dalhousie in Hawk Classic tournament

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Dalhousie Tigers finished the Hawk Classic with a perfect 2-0 record after defeating the host Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 69-61 at the Athletic Complex.

The visitors jumped out to an early lead and continued to roll over the Hawks, who were suffering from shooting difficulties early on. By then end of the first quarter the Tigers held a 19-11 advantage. The purple and gold rallied late in the second frame on some strong shooting from Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.). By half Laurier had whittled the lead down to 34-29.

The Golden Hawks continued their strong play into the second half and took the lead briefly on a Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.) three pointer. Laurier and Dalhousie would continue to trade opportunities until late in the quarter when William Yengue put back his own rebound to give the visitors a five point lead. Jesse MacDonald (Brantford, Ont.) hit two free throws to take the lead down to three to start the final frame. Laurier continued to have a strong outside game with a three pointer from Harrison that tied up the match early in the fourth. However, the Tigers went on a scoring streak and hit three straight buckets to build a seven point lead. They would continue to take the game to the Hawks to earn an 11 point advantage with two minutes remaining. The Hawks were able to take that down to eight before time expired.

The leading scorers for the Golden Hawks were fifth year guard Jesse MacDonald with 15, Kale Harrison with 13 and Max Allin with ten. The Hawks top rebounds were Harrison and Allin who combined for 14 boards.

The Tigers were led by Simon Farine who had a double double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Joeseph Schow put in an 18 point effort and Sandy Veit chipped in 12.

Next up for the Hawks will be another pre-season matchup, this time with the Saint Mary’s Huskies. The game will be played on Friday, October 23rd
