Laurier women's curlers increase record to 3-0
EDMONTON - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawk women’s
curling team continued with a pair of victories at the CIS
Championships at the Saville Centre on the campus of University of
Alberta. The wins increase the team’s record to 3-0 in the
five-game pool play tournament.
The victories were both over teams from eastern Canada including a 9-2 win over UPEI and 11-6 over Dalhousie.
Early on day two of the Championship the Hawks faced UPEI (0-1). PEI opened with the hammer and after blanking the first end, picked up a single in the second. The Golden Hawks picked up a single in the third and then stole two in the fourth end before UPEI added what would be their final point of the contest in the fifth end. Six purple-and-gold points would be added through three ends before the teams shook hands at the end of the eighth.
Laurier’s second draw of the day opened strong as they took home three points in the first end and then stole three in the second and one in the third to go up 7-0. Dalhousie added two in the fourth end to slightly close the gap before the team’s each picked up threes in the fifth and sixth ends. The team’s swapped singles in the seventh and eighth, finally forcing Dalhousie (0-2) to shake hands for their third loss of the tournament.
Laurier presently sits first in pool c with their 3-0 record with three teams behind with 2-1 records including Concordia, Alberta and Waterloo. The Hawks will start day three of the tournament with a 9:00 a.m. (local) draw against the Concordia Stingers. They then play at 7:00 p.m. (local) against the host Alberta Pandas.
