Hawks open CIS curling championship with win
EDMONTON – The Golden Hawk women’s curling
team opened the 2010 CIS Championship tournament with a 9-3 victory
over the Waterloo Warriors.
The game is the first of a five-pool play system for the team.
Laurier continues with a game at 9:00 a.m. (local time) against the
University of Prince Edward Island Panthers.
“It was a good start to the championship,” commented
Inglis post game. “We were really hoping for a win to get the
Nationals started off well.”
Laurier opened up the contest picking up a single point in the
first end before Waterloo evened it up at singles in the second
end. The third however saw skip Danielle
Inglis (Kleinburg, Ont.) make a key shot to grab two and what would
be the lead for the balance of the game.
Waterloo had trouble in the fourth end as they put the rock through
the house and Laurier stole two. The following two ends also saw
late errors by Waterloo, which resulted in single point steals for
the Hawks. The Warriors eventually picked up two in the
seventh end before Laurier ended it in the eighth with another
pair.
“It’s a good feeling to beat them,” said Inglis
referring to the trouble Waterloo has given the program all season
including a loss in the provincial championship game 6-5. “We
came our sharper and we made sure that we played our
best.”
The Hawks will play two games on Thursday while the men’s
program will open it’s competition schedule as well. For up
