OUA curling awards and all-stars announced
HAMILTON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased
to announce the 2010 curling major award winners and all-stars.
Rory Munro of the Western Mustangs has been named
OUA coach of the year for the second straight season. Under his
guidance both Western men's and women's teams earned OUA
championships berths, with the men completing a perfect 8-0 season.
Both teams are the defending OUA champions.
Four of Munro's players have been named 2010 OUA all-stars,
including men's first-team vice Micky Lizmore
(London, Ont.) and second Joey Lanthier (Lively,
Ont.). Lizmore, who represented Ontario in the 2007 Canadian junior
men's curling championship, has shot 75 percent in play leading up
to the OUA championship. He is a three-time all-star. Lanthier had
a very successful rookie campaign on the OUA circuit, shooting 76
percent. He is a four-time Northern Ontario junior provincial
finalist.
Rounding out the men's first-team all-stars are skip Pat
Janssen (Scarborough, Ont.) of the Toronto Varsity Blues
and lead Joel Waters (Georgetown, Ont.) of the
Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Janssen was a second-team all-star
skip last year. Waters is in his first OUA season.
Western skip Evan Lilly (Sudbury, Ont.) headlines
the men's second-team all-stars. Lilly is also a four-time Northern
Ontario junior men's finalist, shooting 77 percent in his first OUA
season as a skip. He was an all-Canadian second at last year's
Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) - Canadian Curling Association
(CCA) championships in Montreal.
Joining Lilly as OUA men's second-team all-stars are vice
Bill Francis (Toronto) and lead Matt
Hardman (Markham, Ont.) of the Varsity Blues and second
Tyler Jones (Peterborough, Ont.) of the Trent
Excalibur. Francis is a two-time all-star, while Hardman and Jones
are receiving all-star recognition for the first time.
The undefeated Brock Badgers women's team has four all-stars as
they look to win the OUA championship this weekend. Skip
Courtney Hodgsen (Guelph, Ont.) and second
Joanne Curtis (Brampton, Ont.) earned first-team
nods. Curtis is competing in her first season of OUA curling.
Joining them on the first-team are vice Megan
Balsdon (Toronto) of Western and lead Hilary
McDermott (Guelph, Ont.) of Laurier. Earlier this season,
Balsdon competed in the Scotties Ontario women's finals. She
represented Ontario at the Canadian junior women's championships in
2001. McDermott is a two-time all-star.
Vice Jessica Corrado (Etobicoke, Ont.) and lead
Korie Kidd (Niagara Falls, Ont.) of the Badgers
were named OUA second-team all-stars in their first OUA season, as
is skip Stephanie Van Huyse (Toronto) of Trent. Second-team
all-star second Jenny Gates (Sudbury, Ont.) of the
Laurentian Lady Vees played second on the Northern Ontario team
that won bronze at the 2010 M&M Meatshop Canadian Junior
Championships. Gates is the second member of her family to be named
an OUA all-star after sister Amanda was named first-team vice last
season. She was a member of the CIS-CCA bronze medal winning team
in 2009.
