CIS athletes of the week (#2): Saint Mary’s Burgess, Cape Breton’s Bean honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer players Kelly Burgess from Saint Mary’s University and Keishen Bean from Cape Breton University are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 18, 2011.

Burgess, a fifth-year science student from Halifax, scored five goals in two games over the weekend to lead the Huskies (2-1) to a road sweep of UNB, 3-2, and Moncton, 5-1. The prolific striker tallied all three of her team’s goal Saturday in Fredericton, including the game-winner in the 79th minute, and added a pair on Sunday as Saint Mary’s wrapped up its perfect tour of New Brunswick. Burgess, an AUS all-star each of her four seasons with the Huskies, currently leads the Atlantic conference in scoring with five markers in three outings.

Soccer players Éva Thouvenot-Hébert of Montreal, Emily Brown of Wilfrid Laurier and Sarah Benson of Calgary were also nominated for the women’s award.

Bean, a fourth-year student from Sandys, Bermuda, also found the back of the net five times last weekend as the No. 6-ranked Capers improved to 3-0 in conference play with a 3-1 victory over Memorial and a 9-1 domination of Acadia. After opening the scoring on Saturday against the Sea-Hawks, the former all-Canadian had a career day on Sunday with four goals, including the game-winner at the 26-minute mark. Bean is tied for the AUS scoring lead with five tallies in three matches.

Laval cross country runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot and soccer players Davor Alisic of Laurentian and Jerson Barandica-Hamilton of Saskatchewan were the other male nominees.
