OTTAWA (CIS) – Geneviève Cantin, a swimmer from Laval University, and Jimmy Dorsey, a basketball player from Cape Breton University, are the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 12, 2012.

Cantin, a first-year science student from Jonquière, Que., was named female athlete of the year, rookie of the year and meet MVP following the RSEQ swimming championships in Trois-Rivières, Que., where she claimed six gold medals in as many events, including a record-breaking performance in the 200-metre backstroke. The 20-year-old freshman captured individual gold in the 100 and 200 backstroke as well as in the 200 and 400 medley, and helped the Rouge et Or relays take the 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle titles. Cantin, who set a personal best and a Quebec university record with her time of 2:09.69 in the 200 back, will make her CIS championship debut next week at the University of Montreal (Feb. 23-25).

Swimmers Katie Webster of Dalhousie and Vanessa Treasure of Toronto, as well as Calgary wrestler Erica Wiebe were also nominated for the women’s award.

Dorsey, a fourth-year student from Baltimore, Md., averaged a triple-double last weekend, including 34.5 points per game, as the Capers moved to third in the AUS standings thanks to wins over first-place UPEI and (then) second-place Acadia. The 6-foot-2 guard opened the two-game set on Saturday with his second triple-double of the campaign racking up 20 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in a 111-90 defeat of Acadia. The two-time AUS all-star was even better on Sunday as he exploded for a school-record 49 points to go with 14 assists and eight boards in a 111-106 victory over UPEI. Dorsey’s 49-point effort is the best single-game performance of the season in CIS and ranks sixth in AUS history.
