CIS athletes of the week (#15): McGill’s Bettez, Cape Breton’s Dorsey honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Ann-Sophie Bettez, a hockey player from McGill University, and Jimmy Dorsey, a basketball player from Cape Breton University, are the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 15, 2012.
Bettez, who is enrolled in a public relations management certificate, was in on eight of her team’s nine goals last weekend as the top-ranked Martlets (12-1) posted back-to-back shutouts over Concordia, 4-0, and No. 10 Montreal, 5-0. The fifth-year forward from Sept-Îles, Que., scored the game-winner and added three assists on Friday against the Stingers, and then tallied two more goals and a pair of helpers the next day against the Carabins. A three-time all-Canadian, Bettez currently leads the RSEQ conference in scoring with 26 points (11-15-26) in only 13 games.
St. Francis Xavier hockey player Janelle Parent, Ryerson basketball player Angela Tilk and Winnipeg volleyball player Lauren Sears were also nominated for the women’s award.
Dorsey, a fourth-year student from Baltimore, Md., averaged 25 points a game last week as he led the Capers (7-3) to three straight wins and first place in the AUS standings. The 6-foot-2 guard kicked off the three-game set last Wednesday with a 24-point, eight-assist, five-rebound performance in a 101-88 victory over the StFX X-Men, who were undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the country prior to the contest. He then added 23 points and seven assists on Saturday in a 94-61 defeat of Memorial, and a 28-point, 11-rebound double-double the next day in an 88-84 win over the same Sea-Hawks. A two-time Atlantic conference all-star, Dorsey is currently third in AUS and seventh in CIS scoring with 20.6 points per outing.
