BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week (#7): UOIT’s Larabie, McGill’s Verreault-Paul honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Hockey players Jessica Larabie of the
University of Ontario Institute of Technology and Francis
Verreault-Paul of McGill are the BlackBerry Canadian
Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the
period ending Oct. 24, 2010.
Larabie, a second-year communications student from Pickering, Ont.,
recorded her first career shutout and allowed only one goal in 122
minutes and 21 seconds of play over the past weekend to help the
Ridgebacks (2-3-1) pick up three out of a possible four points
during a two-game set against Queen’s. In a 1-0 loss on
Saturday, the sophomore goaltender stood on her head as her team
was outshot 40-22 and managed to push the contest to overtime,
before the Gaels finally beat her on their fourth shot of the extra
period. Larabie was at it again on Sunday and this time she was
perfect, turning aside all 24 pucks fired her way as UOIT rebounded
with a 4-0 victory.
UNB swimmer Danielle Losier and rugby players Mackenzie Stairs of
Laval and Shannon Court of Lethbridge were also nominated for the
women’s award.
Verreault-Paul, a third-year science student from Mashteuiatsh,
Que., scored nine goals, including a pair of game-winners, and
added an assist in three contests, all victories by the No.
2-ranked Redmen (6-0). The 5-foot-10, 180-pound winger kicked off
his successful week of work on Oct. 18 with two goals and a helper
in a 6-3 defeat of archrival UQTR. He was even more explosive on
the weekend, netting a hat-trick in a 9-0 shutout of RMC on Friday
night and adding four more goals in a 7-1 win over Queen’s on
Saturday. The 23-year-old, a first-team all-Canadian a year ago,
leads the country this season with 10 goals in six outings and is
tied for the CIS lead with 16 points.
