BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week (#5): UFV’s Kuyer, Ottawa’s Blain honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Fraser Valley soccer player Ellen Kuyer and Ottawa hockey player Luc Blain are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 10, 2010.

Kuyer, a fourth-year business major from Surrey, B.C., recorded a hat trick in the second half on Saturday to lead the Cascades (4-3-1) to a 4-3 upset of the No. 10-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (6-3-1) in Vancouver. The 5-foot-11 forward scored in the 46th and 64th minutes and then tallied the game-winner at the 86-minute mark, only three minutes after the T-Birds had tied the contest at 3-3. On Friday, Kuyer also helped Fraser Valley battle to a 2-2 draw with two-time defending CIS champion and No. 8 Trinity Western (6-2-2).

Acadia rugby player Allison Jordan and Brock hockey player Beth Clause were also nominated for the women’s award.

Blain, a first-year arts student from Longueuil, Que., racked up seven points over the first two games of his CIS career including all four Gee-Gees goals on Saturday in a 4-3 overtime win over RMC. In Friday’s season opener, a 7-6 shootout loss to Queen’s, the 6-foot-3 forward tallied three assists including a pair in the third period as Ottawa (1-0-1) rallied from a 6-3 deficit to force extra time. He followed up on Saturday with a performance for the ages, completing his hat trick early in the third frame and then capping off the Gee-Gees’ three-point weekend with an unassisted goal 3:23 into overtime.
