BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week (#4): Calgarys Miller, Albertas Lam honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer players Tessa Miller of Calgary and
Sam Lam of Alberta are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity
Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending
Oct. 3, 2010.
Miller, a third-year kinesiology student from Calgary, was in on
every Dinos goal last weekend as the U of C (3-4-1) swept
Lethbridge 1-0 and 3-0 in their annual home-and-home series to move
into a tie for fourth place in the Canada West standings. The
series opener on Saturday was decided in dramatic fashion when the
20-year-old forward’s cross found the foot of teammate Sarah
Benson and the back of the net in the 90th minute of play. In
Sunday’s 3-0 decision, Miller scored the first two goals and
added another assist to complete her four-point weekend.
Soccer players Nicholle Morrison of Cape Breton and
Véronique Laverdière of Montreal, as well as Guelph
rugby player Jacey Murphy were also nominated for the women’s
award.
Lam, a third-year open studies student from Edmonton, also
contributed to each of his team’s goals over the past weekend
tallying three markers and as many assists to lead the No. 4-ranked
Golden Bears (7-1-0) to a pair of road victories over Top-10
opponents. In a 2-1 win over No. 6 UBC (5-2-0) on Friday, the
5-foot-9 midfielder opened the scoring in the 49th minute and set
up the game-winner six minutes later. On Saturday, he added two
goals and a pair of helpers in a 4-0 rout of the Trinity Western
Spartans (3-2-2), who were ranked 10th in the nation going into the
contest.
