BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week (#25): UNB hockey player Gallant honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – University of New Brunswick hockey player Luke Gallant is the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport male athlete of the week for the period ending March 27, 2011.

This marks the end of the CIS athlete-of-the-week selections for the 2010-11 season. There were no women’s events last week.

Gallant, a fourth-year business administration student from Bedford, N.S., received the Major W.J. ‘Danny’ McLeod Award as University Cup MVP after leading the top-seeded and tournament host Varsity Reds to their third CIS men’s hockey title in five years, in Fredericton. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound defenceman led all players at the tourney with seven points (2-5-7) in three outings including an assist on Josh Kidd’s game-winning goal with 4.1 seconds remaining in a 2-1 victory over Calgary last Thursday and back-to-back game-winners in a 4-0 shutout of Western on Saturday and a 4-0 whitewash of second-ranked McGill in Sunday’s national final. Gallant earned Game-MVP honours against both Western and McGill following a pair of three-point performances and helped the V-Reds set a record for fewest goals allowed under the current six-team, two-pool University Cup format.

Fellow hockey players Maxime Langelier-Parent of McGill and Derek Ryan of Alberta were also nominated for the award.
