BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week (#2): Saskatchewans Hudon, Westerns Mavrikos honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer players Elizabeth Hudon of
Saskatchewan and Niko Mavrikos of Western Ontario are the
BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes
of the week for the period ending Sept. 19, 2010.
Hudon, a fourth-year kinesiology student from Prince Albert, Sask.,
had a career weekend tallying five goals and two assists to help
the Huskies (1-2-1) pick up their first points of the young Canada
West season with a 9-0 shutout of Lethbridge and a 2-2 draw against
Calgary. On Saturday, the senior striker opened the scoring in the
third minute of play on a penalty kick, completed her hat trick
before halftime and added a pair of helpers before being taken out
of the lopsided match after 72 minutes. Her contribution was even
more critical on Sunday as she scored both Saskatchewan goals in
the tie against the Dinos. The Huskies face quite a challenge this
weekend when they travel to B.C. to meet nationally top-ranked and
two-time defending CIS champion Trinity Western (4-0-0) on Friday
and No. 5 UBC (3-0-1) on Saturday.
StFX rugby player Tyson Beukeboom, McGill cross-country runner
Sarah McCuaig and Guelph field hockey player Brienne Stairs were
also nominated for the women’s award.
Mavrikos, a third-year management and organizational studies
student from Victoria, had a career day of his own last Saturday
when he netted all five goals in a 5-0 road win over UOIT,
including four in a span of 17 minutes. Earlier in the week, the
talented striker had helped undefeated Western blank Windsor 3-0.
The Mustangs, who moved up two spots to No. 3 in the CIS Top 10
following the two victories and have the best record in the nation
at 6-0-0, take the field three times in five days this week
starting Wednesday night at Laurier
(3-2-0).
Saint Mary’s soccer player Adam Miller, Laval cross-country
runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot and Trinity Western soccer
player Andrew Fink were the other male nominees.
