BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week (#1): UBCs Frazao, Dalhousies Hagen honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer players Janine Frazao of UBC and
Ross Hagen of Dalhousie are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity
Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending
Sept. 12, 2010.
Frazao, a second-year student from Port Moody, B.C., kicked off the
Canada West regular season with a pair of two-goal performances to
lead the No. 4-ranked Thunderbirds (2-0-0) to road wins over
Calgary, 2-0, and Lethbridge, 4-1. After providing all the scoring
in the T-Birds’ opener on Saturday with tallies in the 27th
and 90th minutes, the 5-foot-5 sophomore, who leads the conference
in goals and points after the first weekend of action, scored
insurance markers in the 67th and 74th minutes in Sunday’s
victory over the Pronghorns. UBC hosts Manitoba (0-1-1) and Regina
(1-0-1) this weekend.
StFX soccer player Anna Thompson, McGill soccer player Alexandra
Morin-Boucher and Western Ontario rugby player Arielle
Dubissette-Borrice were also nominated for the women’s
award.
Hagen, a fifth-year commerce student from Calgary, scored all four
of his team’s goals during the first weekend of AUS
conference play as Dalhousie (1-0-1) opened the schedule with a 2-0
shutout of Acadia and a 2-2 draw against Moncton. The Tigers
captain, who was named player of the game following both contests,
tallied the game-winner after only eight minutes of play on
Saturday before saving the day on Sunday, when he scored the
equalizer on a penalty kick with only two minutes left in the
match. Dalhousie hosts Cape Breton (0-2-0) on Saturday for its lone
