BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week: Albertas Proudfoot, Lakeheads Anilane honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Alberta volleyball player Tiffany Proudfoot
and Lakehead hockey player Victor Anilane are the BlackBerry
Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week
for the period ending Oct. 25, 2009.
Proudfoot, a third-year physical education and recreation student
from Calgary, racked up 42 kills in two matches as the Pandas (2-0)
opened the regular season with a weekend sweep of provincial rival
Calgary (0-2) in a battle of Top-10 teams. The 6-foot left-side
hitter, who also chipped in on defence with eight digs in each
duel, led all players on the court in both games tallying 20 kills
in a straight-set win on Friday night and 22 more in a five-set
affair on Saturday. Following the doubleheader in Edmonton, Alberta
moved up two spots to No. 3 in the CIS rankings, while Calgary
dropped two positions to No. 6.
Soccer players Laura Breen of Memorial, Camille Vandenberghe of
Sherbrooke and Renee MacLellan of Queen’s were also nominated
for the women’s award.
Anilane, a first-year commerce student from Gothenburg, Sweden,
tallied four goals and one assist to lead the Thunderwolves (5-0-1)
to a two-game sweep of previously undefeated Brock (4-2), which
entered the weekend ranked sixth in the nation. The 6-foot-3,
205-pound forward, who is in a three-way tie for the OUA scoring
lead with 10 points in six conference outings, netted two goals in
a 4-0 shutout on Friday and had a three-point night on Saturday as
the Wolves edged the Badgers 4-3. With the victories, Lakehead
moved up three spots to No. 4 in the national rankings.
Moncton soccer player Olivier Babineau and Calgary volleyball
player Graham Vigrass were the other male nominees.
