BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week: Westerns Cotten, Calgarys Effah honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Track and field stars Jen Cotten of Western
Ontario and Sam Effah of Calgary are the BlackBerry Canadian
Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the
period ending February 28, 2010.
Cotten, a fifth-year sciences student from Barrie, Ont., claimed
four medals at the OUA championships held at York University last
weekend including gold in the long jump (5.85m), indoor pentathlon
(3,718 points) and 4x400m relay, as well as silver in the 60m
hurdles (8.55). Her results in the long jump and pentathlon both
exceeded her gold-medal performances at last year’s CIS
championships, when she was named the outstanding female athlete of
the meet. An eight-time medallist in four previous national
championship appearances, including three pentathlon titles, Cotten
will be among athletes to keep an eye on at the 2010 CIS meet in
Windsor, from March 12 to 14.
Track and field athletes Celia Peters of Dalhousie, Pascale
Délisle of Sherbrooke and Amonn Nelson of Calgary were also
nominated for the women’s award.
Effah, a fourth-year communication and culture student from
Calgary, was named the outstanding male performer at the Canada
West championships held in Edmonton after he won the 60m (6.67) and
300m (33.60) races. His time in the 300m, which would have been
good for CIS gold a year ago, was just four hundredths of a second
slower than the conference record which has stood since 1984. The
two-time reigning CIS male athlete of the year in track events,
Effah hopes to add to his gold medal collection next week in
Windsor.
Track and field athletes Simon Watts of Dalhousie, Pierre Puyjalon
of Sherbrooke and Dontae Richards-Kwok of York were the other male
nominees.
