BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week: Olympic swimmers Saumur, Russell honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Swimmers Geneviève Saumur of Montreal and Colin Russell of Toronto are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending February 7, 2010.

Saumur, a first-year kinesiology student from Montreal, was named female athlete of the meet and female rookie of the year after she claimed six gold medals in as many swims at the QSSF championships in Quebec City. The 2008 Canadian Olympian won the 50 (25.87), 100 (55.83) and 200-metre (2:00.87) freestyle races as well as the 50 backstroke (28.88), and was part of the gold-medal winning 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle relays. Saumur, whose performances helped the Carabins capture the QSSF women’s team banner, will compete at the CIS championships from February 18 to 20 at the University of Toronto.

Dalhousie swimmer Kristen Vandenberg, Western Ontario swimmer Hayley Nell and Regina volleyball player Beth Clark were also nominated for the women’s award.

Russell, a fifth-year arts and science student from Burlington, Ont., was named male athlete of the meet after he captured five gold medals in five events and shattered four meet records at the OUA championships in St. Catharines, Ont. The 2008 Canadian Olympian set new OUA championship marks in the 100 (49.17) and 200-metre freestyle (1:47.23), the 50 breaststroke (28.42) and the 4x100 medley relay (3:44.81), and claimed his fifth victory of the weekend in the 50 free (22.94). Russell and the OUA men’s champion Varsity Blues will have home-field advantage at next week’s CIS meet.

Dalhousie swimmer David Sharpe, Laval swimmer Éric Cantin and Brandon volleyball player Paul Sanderson were the other male nominees.
