BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week: Olympic swimmers Saumur, Russell honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Swimmers Geneviève Saumur of
Montreal and Colin Russell of Toronto are the BlackBerry Canadian
Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the
period ending February 7, 2010.
Saumur, a first-year kinesiology student from Montreal, was named
female athlete of the meet and female rookie of the year after she
claimed six gold medals in as many swims at the QSSF championships
in Quebec City. The 2008 Canadian Olympian won the 50 (25.87), 100
(55.83) and 200-metre (2:00.87) freestyle races as well as the 50
backstroke (28.88), and was part of the gold-medal winning 4x100
and 4x200 freestyle relays. Saumur, whose performances helped the
Carabins capture the QSSF women’s team banner, will compete
at the CIS championships from February 18 to 20 at the University
of Toronto.
Dalhousie swimmer Kristen Vandenberg, Western Ontario swimmer
Hayley Nell and Regina volleyball player Beth Clark were also
nominated for the women’s award.
Russell, a fifth-year arts and science student from Burlington,
Ont., was named male athlete of the meet after he captured five
gold medals in five events and shattered four meet records at the
OUA championships in St. Catharines, Ont. The 2008 Canadian

200-metre freestyle (1:47.23), the 50 breaststroke (28.42) and the
