BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week: Saskatchewan’s George, Glover honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Hockey player Breanne George and basketball player Showron Glover, both of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending January 31, 2010.

George, a third-year kinesiology student from Saskatoon, tallied six goals and an assist to lead the nationally No. 7-ranked Huskies (12-5-3) to a weekend sweep of provincial rival Regina. The 5-foot-4 forward, who ranks second in the country in goals (21) and third in points (34) for the season, opened the two-game set with a four-goal, one assist effort in a 6-1 win Saturday night. On Sunday, she added two markers, including the game-tying goal in the third period, and scored in the shootout session as Saskatchewan came from behind to prevail 4-3.

Dalhousie hockey player Jocelyn LeBlanc, Laval track sprinter Geneviève Thibault and Guelph track runner Rachel Cliff were also nominated for the women’s award.

Glover, a second-year arts and science student from Fresno, California, averaged 34 points per game and recorded the first “triple-double” in team history as the Huskies (10-6) swept a doubleheader against Manitoba, 101-66 and 115-72. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound guard kicked off the weekend with 31 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists on Saturday night, and was one board shy of a “double-double” on Sunday finishing with 37 points and nine rebounds. Glover leads the nation in scoring with 27.6 points per outing.

Moncton hockey player Kevin Lachance, Sherbrooke track sprinter Ben Youssef Méité and Carleton basketball player Kevin McCleery were the other male nominees.
